Benjamin is once again toothless.
It’s been almost a year since Benjamin knocked-out his three front teeth. Okay, so technically he knocked back his three front teeth, by colliding with a bench at the park. Our dentist then pulled the damaged teeth out. For the past nine months, Benjamin has been fitted with an appliance.
Pierre and I really went back and forth, all those months ago, trying to decide whether or not to get Benjamin fake teeth. We considered the spacing in his mouth, as well as eating, speaking and social aspects… but, it still seemed crazy to be getting our five year-old fake teeth. Fake teeth, for goodness sake! And in those first few days that Ben’s appliance found a home in his mouth, none of us were sure that it was the right choice. Benjamin was uncomfortable, and Pierre and I weren’t sold on the naturalness (is that a word?) of Ben’s new smile. Kind of makes sense, I guess. They were fake teeth after all.
In the end, we made the best decision that we could at the time. And, you know what? It turned out just fine. It didn’t take long for Ben to feel comfortable with his new teeth. His speech improved, as did his ability to bite into food. Few people even realized that Benjamin’s front teeth weren’t real. And Pierre and I both grew to love Ben’s smile, simply because it was Ben’s.
Now a quick nine month’s later (is it just me or is time going by faster and faster?), the dentist removed Ben’s appliance during the boys’ last check-up. Ben’s top teeth have started to grow-in! Once again, he has a new smile:
One more toothless shot. You can more-or-less see the tonsils that he has to have removed:
Benjamin wanted to leave his appliance under his pillow for the Tooth Fairy. He was sure that the Tooth Fairy wouldn’t discriminate when it came to teeth, real or fake. Turns out Ben was right, and the Tooth Fairy left him a five-dollar Canadian bill. I guess that she had just returned from a trip to Canada too!
