There is really nothing like a little boy’s love of tractors. Tractors are big and loud and dirty, a combination that adds up to little-boy-Heaven. As far as Benjamin and Nicholas, especially Nicholas, are concerned there may be nothing better than the grunts and grinds of a big, loud, dirty, yellow tractor. Lucky for them, Grandpa owns five such big, loud, dirty machines. And, during our visit to Montreal this summer, one of those yellow tractors just happened to be parked in Grandpa and Grandma’s backyard.
Little. Boy. Heaven.
Grandpa taught each of his operators, in turn, how to turn on the backhoe and work the shovel. They lowered and lifted, and lowered and lifted, to their tractor-loving hearts’ content.
Nicholas proclaimed that it was the best day of his life. Ever. He is very disappointed that we don’t have a tractor in our backyard.
Later in the week, Grandpa gave each of his boys their very own John Deere tractor key, so that they could be official backhoe operators. The boys were very concerned that Grandpa wouldn’t be able to start his tractor if they had the keys. Not to worry. With five backhoes, Grandpa has a few keys to spare.
Back in Pennsylvania, Benjamin and Nicholas handed their keys to me for safe-keeping. We’ll bring them back to Montreal at Christmas, so that Grandpa’s protégées can help him with snow-removal.

Adorable!! I love that your son said it was the best day of his life. :)
ReplyDeleteLast year, I took my son to an antique tractor show (who knew there was even such a thing?) but he wasn't quite old enough to appreciate it. I'm thinking that this year, he'll like it a lot more.
Your son is such a cutie! I bet he will love the antique show this year. Nicholas would LOVE it!! He is so into tractors right now.
