Introducing Indy!

We got a puppy. Say hello to Indy.

That’s Indy as in Jones. Dr. Jones (We named the dog Indiana!). Indy is an F1B Goldendoodle. A Goldendoodle is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Standard Poodle. F1B means that Indy is the result of a Goldendoodle bred with a Standard Poodle. We chose a Goldendoodle because of Ben’s allergy to dogs, and Indy is as a close to hypoallergenic as a dog can get. He doesn’t shed. For my overworked vacuum, that’s good news!

Indy is very cute. There’s a reason that puppies are made so cute. It’s a survival tactic, to be sure. But, he’s also cuddly and sweet and loves being wherever we all are. He follows me through the house like a duckling. It’s nice (except for when I break my neck tripping over him). And I think he’s pretty smart. Potty-training is coming along, and Indy is learning to sit and give his paw. Not a bad start.

I’d tell you that the boys begged me for a puppy after we lost Diesel. That I caved after relentless nagging. It’s just not true. The driving force behind Indy joining our family was me. I just couldn’t get used to not having a dog in the house. Our home felt empty without Diesel. Something was missing. There was no pup greeting us at the door, cuddled at our feet under the able, waiting for a treat in the morning. I’m a dog-person; we’re dog family. Since the timing was good Pierre and I decided to go ahead, and bring home a puppy.

Now, Diesel was (is) irreplaceable. And the first night that we brought Indy home I sat in the living-room, cuddling him in my lap, and had a bit of a cry. It felt so strange to have a dog, other than Diesel, in the house.  I felt like I was cheating on my Diesy-Bear. Grief is funny like that. It hits you at the most unlikely times.

And, it’s been a adjustment having a puppy in the house. Indy takes up a lot of my time. Having a puppy is not like having a newborn. It’s like having a very naughty eighteen-month-old. A toddler who is into everything, putting who-knows-what in his mouth, and pees on the floor. There are baby gates up all over my house again. I’ve put everything that he can choke on out of reach, and I’m every-vigilant for when Indy starts giving the signal. You know, THE signal.

The first few days were tough. I called Pierre at work five times a day (okay, an hour!) asking him what the h-e-l-l we were thinking, bringing home a puppy. Am I insane? I sure have felt like it!  Now, we’re slowly getting into a new family routine, and Ben and Nicholas are becoming more and more involved in helping me with Indy’s care. They love giving him treats, and running through the house with Indy at their heels. Puppies bring a whole lot of laughter.

Oh, and Ben loves to wrestle with his puppy too. He lets Indy win.

I’ll admit: I have no idea what to do with a puppy. Not a clue. I’m learning as I go, and relying on family and friends who have been there, done that to help.

Right now, Indy is lying at my feet as I write this, belly in the air. Very cute…at least until he wakes up and tries to eat my flip-flop again.

Funny Medicine

So, after blogging about Ben’s ear infection, a good friend messaged me on Facebook with a unique remedy for ear pain. She’s had a ruptured eardrum, so if she says that this works, I’m inclined to believe her. Here’s the message: “If Ben complains about pain, take an onion and mash it as you would a potato. Then, wrap it in something and heat it in the microwave till it’s hot (not hot like I'll burn you if I touch it, but hot). Take it out of the microwave and wrap it in a towel (don't worry you can wash it out after), put it on a pillow and then have Ben put his sore ear on it. When he no longer feels the heat, move a piece of towel away so he is one layer closer to the onion.” What do you think? Neat, eh? My pediatrician recommended a few drops of olive oil in the ear to ease pain. I’ve tried it with Ben, and it seemed to give him some relief. I’m going to try the onion. Why not? It’s an alternative that just might work. And I think that Ben would find it kind of fun to put...

Here we go….

I’ve been wanting to start a blog for a while now. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about starting it, talking about starting it, tinkering with the layout (and that was hard because I am basically a computer-dummy), and now, writing it. Is anyone actually going to read what I write on here? Maybe. Well….my mom will read it (Hi Mom!). Regardless, I do have a purpose to starting this, and here it is: Deciding to be a mom was one the very best decision that I have ever made (second only to marrying Pierre), and I want to share that. The time spent being home with my boys goes by so fast. Ok….let’s rephrase that….actual days can seem endless (and there are definitely times when I call Pierre at work, and tell him not to dare come home without wine. Or chocolate. Or both!!), but still each day, each week, seems to be going by faster and faster. I blinked and my youngest went from being a baby to turning three years old this coming Tuesday. And the next time I blink he’ll be thirty-three!...

Caterpillars Are Friends

After all the complaining about ticks, I probably should try to show that I am a friend to most creepy-crawlies. So, allow me to introduce to the newest members of our family….five Painted-Lady Butterfly caterpillars.   Nicholas received these little critters for his birthday from our very good friends Kim & Brad, and their three awesome kiddos.  (Kim used to teach preschool…can you tell?). They came as part of a Live Butterfly Garden and Hatching Kit. We ordered our caterpillars online (anyone interested? Check out www.insectlore.com ), and within three days our caterpillars were delivered to our front porch (I wonder what the postman thought of that? Hope he doesn’t mind larvae!). The boys and I followed the directions in the box, which pretty much amounted to leaving the hungry little bugs alone, (Nicholas needs frequent reminders. He likes to turn the jar upside-down. Can caterpillars have heart attacks?), and in a few more days we should have five little chrysalid...
