One Present Too Many….

Happy Birthday Nicholas!! As of 8:08 a.m. this morning, May 8th (all those eights must be good luck, right?), my littlest man turned three. For me, three years old marks the end of babyhood. He is a full-fledged little boy, and the first to tell you, “I not a baby. I am Nicholas!” Yes you are kid, and one of a kind at that.

It was a day filled with being outside, planting impatiens in the flowerbed, digging in the dirt, going to the park, watching a favorite movie (how many times can they really watch CARS?!), a nap on the couch, and playing, playing, playing. There were packages in the mail, presents, phone calls from family, a chorus of Bonne Fête Nicholas! and cupcakes too.  Not bad, eh? Benjamin was an especially cute big-brother, announcing proudly to just about everyone: “That’s my brother Nicholas (pointing to the birthday boy). It’s his birthday. He’s three. I’m Ben and I’m four and a half, but I’m the size of a six-year-old.” (That’s true!). This announcement earned him and his brother a sticker from the kind cashier at Target (LOVE Target!).

Little chef making cupcakes for his brother.

Tired birthday boy.

There was one aspect of the day that I could have done without however. Nicholas was given an unwanted present at the park, a nasty-little gift from Mother Nature….a tick! And a deer tick at that. Let me say this: I loathe ticks. Ticks freak me out. Now, I have a pretty strong stomach, and can handle a whole lot of yucky stuff. We’ve had our share of stomach flus, allergies, colds, stitches, staples, broken toes, bee stings, poison ivy, projectile spit-up, and all sorts of little boy goop. I’m o.k. with bees, wasps, spiders, stink-bugs, and worms (I even like worms!)  BUT, I draw the line at ticks. Ticks are gross. They make my skin crawl. So imagine the ick factor when I found one attached to Nicholas’ arm as I strapped him into his car-seat. First reaction? Get the sucker off, ASAP!! Which is what I did, throwing it to the ground of the Target parking lot. My next thought? *%$#! I need to keep the disgusting little bugger to have it tested for Lyme’s disease! So, there I am, basically on my hands and knees outside Target searching for a bug smaller than an M&M, while the peanut gallery in the van asked over and over: “Mommy, what are you doing?!” Uh…..Mommy’s looking for something…..Gross.

I never found the tick, but I did call the boys’ pediatrician as soon as I got home. Turns out a tick needs to be embedded (Ewwww!!) for at least 24 hours before there is any risk of Lyme’s disease. In the meantime I treated the bite as I would any break in the skin, which meant a good wash with soap and hot water, along with some serious disinfectant. Our pediatrician (who is awesome!!), advised me of a few symptoms to look for, just in case: rash that spreads in the next few days, flu like symptoms in the next few weeks, and complaints of joint pain.

Whew. Crisis averted, right?

Think I’ll go buy some bug-spray.

In the meantime, I did promise to share recipes, so here’s the one for the cupcakes Ben and I made for Nicholas. They were super tasty and jam-filled, as requested by the birthday boy. Thank you, Giada De Laurentiis. Enjoy!

  1. Hi Sweetie,
This blog is great. I love reading it but I don't know how to make one. Hope all is well with you, Pierre and the boys.
    All my love,

Funny Medicine

So, after blogging about Ben’s ear infection, a good friend messaged me on Facebook with a unique remedy for ear pain. She’s had a ruptured eardrum, so if she says that this works, I’m inclined to believe her. Here’s the message: “If Ben complains about pain, take an onion and mash it as you would a potato. Then, wrap it in something and heat it in the microwave till it’s hot (not hot like I'll burn you if I touch it, but hot). Take it out of the microwave and wrap it in a towel (don't worry you can wash it out after), put it on a pillow and then have Ben put his sore ear on it. When he no longer feels the heat, move a piece of towel away so he is one layer closer to the onion.” What do you think? Neat, eh? My pediatrician recommended a few drops of olive oil in the ear to ease pain. I’ve tried it with Ben, and it seemed to give him some relief. I’m going to try the onion. Why not? It’s an alternative that just might work. And I think that Ben would find it kind of fun to put...

Here we go….

I’ve been wanting to start a blog for a while now. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about starting it, talking about starting it, tinkering with the layout (and that was hard because I am basically a computer-dummy), and now, writing it. Is anyone actually going to read what I write on here? Maybe. Well….my mom will read it (Hi Mom!). Regardless, I do have a purpose to starting this, and here it is: Deciding to be a mom was one the very best decision that I have ever made (second only to marrying Pierre), and I want to share that. The time spent being home with my boys goes by so fast. Ok….let’s rephrase that….actual days can seem endless (and there are definitely times when I call Pierre at work, and tell him not to dare come home without wine. Or chocolate. Or both!!), but still each day, each week, seems to be going by faster and faster. I blinked and my youngest went from being a baby to turning three years old this coming Tuesday. And the next time I blink he’ll be thirty-three!...

A Brother’s Love

The boys had ice-cream for dessert tonight. In fact, not only did they have ice-cream, they had an ice-cream sundae with whipped cream and strawberries, a special treat as only Grandma can make. Spoiled little bugs. Just as my two sweet-toothed monkeys were about to dig-in, Grandpa, being “the silliest” as Nicholas calls him, pulled a fast one. Taking Nicholas’ bowl of ice-creamy-yumminess, Grandpa said: “Mmmm-mmmm. That’s my ice cream, Nicholas. Thank you!” And he pretended to gobble up the bowl. Nicholas was not impressed. He stuck-out his bottom lip, and gave a somewhat convincing fake cry while burying his little head in his chair. I wouldn’t have awarded him an Oscar for this particular performance, but his point was clear enough: Grandpa had his ice cream, and he wasn’t going to let it be eaten without protest. Now Benjamin, watching all this unfold, had a very different reaction. His big, blue eyes welled up with tears, not of the crocodile variety, his face cru...
