Date Night

Date Night. Were there ever two sweeter words in the English language? Me thinks not. Not for tired parents anyway.

Look, I love my two little bugs to the moon and back, but sometimes I have to just get away. Preferably with Pierre (although a solo trip to Target is nice too!). Parenting is a tough job, so thank goodness my co-worker if such a hottie (Ha! Totally stole that from Pinterest). It’s fun to get dressed-up, go out, drink wine, and have an adult conversation without having to run interference or take someone to the potty every five minutes. Pierre and I have some of our best conversations during date nights. Often, we talk about the boys, but not always. And even talking about the boys is okay by me. We are out. Together. Alone.

I can always tell when the need for date night is looming. There’s a date night vibe. And it’s not a good kind of vibe. Think skies darkening, impending tornado kind of vibe. Precursor tremors to The Big One kind of vibe. Batten-down-the-hatches-there’s-a-storm-a-brewin’ kind of vibe. Yeah, you know what I’m saying. We need to get out when Pierre and I start being snippy with each other. When every conversation leads to misunderstandings, when a look ends up in a blow-up, when we just aren’t feeling it anymore – time for a date. Now, I’d say that our relationship is pretty even-keeled. We have ups and downs. But for the most part, we’re on the steady climb rather than the downwards slide. Sometimes though, life gets too busy, too stressful, too full of other stuff and we just can’t connect. Cue the date night! Is an evening out going to solve everything? No. But, it gives us the chance to take a breather. To look across the table and say, “Hey. I know you. You’re pretty cute. What are you doing later?” Life is nuts. End of story. And it is just going to get nuttier. I don’t want to wake-up beside Pierre in ten years from now and see a stranger in my bed (and by that I mean that Pierre has become the stranger, not that there is someone else in the bed – geez!). Date nights? They rock.

The hardest part? Finding the time to do them!

A few Saturdays ago (it has taken me that long to post this!) we went to Skippack Village for a little sans-kids time.  I LOVE Skippack Village. It is full of cute shops, great food and quaint fun.  We go often for date nights – and by often I mean not all that much, but it is my first choice – always!

We got all dressed up (cute strapless sundress? Yes, I think so!) and landed at the Village Wine Cellar for some pre-dinner wine tasting. We had never been before. Go on your next night out! In fact, go right now! We sat at their cozy little bar tasting a variety of tasty wines, and chatting. We even met another couple with two young kids. We traded stories and laughs. The cellar’s manager was lovely and personable. Oh, and we drank wine. Yummy wine. Made all the more delicious by having the time to sit and sip without fielding dropped forks, requests to play games on the Ipad and trips to the restroom. We even left with a bottle of the cellar’s Sauvignon Blanc. Perfect.

After wine-tasting, Pierre and I made our way over the Bella Rossa at the Hotel Fiesole. There was a wedding at the hotel, and I couldn’t help but take peeks at the bride. Pierre and I have been married for almost ten years. Some days it seems like yesterday, others it feels so long ago that it never happened at all. Know what I mean?  In any case, the happy couple looked, well, happy. And after the wine tasting, so were we! The food at Bella Rossa was awesome. If you go, leave room for dessert and order the crêpes. So, so amazing. There are no words to describe how delicious they were. I dream about them. Not kidding.

And the best part? It was a date night! Pierre and I sat across the booth during dinner and looked at each other and talked. A little (lot) about the boys. A bunch about other stuff. And it didn’t really matter.  We sat, we talked, and we shared the last bite of crêpe. That’s gotta be love.

Can you believe we needed a night away from these two? You bet!

We made our way home at the very late hour of 10 p.m. (don’t judge), and were met with the sweetest sight – two snuggly little boys, fast asleep in their beds. The next morning, the boys got an even sweeter sight: two happy and relaxed parents, ready to to tackle another day.

Funny Medicine

So, after blogging about Ben’s ear infection, a good friend messaged me on Facebook with a unique remedy for ear pain. She’s had a ruptured eardrum, so if she says that this works, I’m inclined to believe her. Here’s the message: “If Ben complains about pain, take an onion and mash it as you would a potato. Then, wrap it in something and heat it in the microwave till it’s hot (not hot like I'll burn you if I touch it, but hot). Take it out of the microwave and wrap it in a towel (don't worry you can wash it out after), put it on a pillow and then have Ben put his sore ear on it. When he no longer feels the heat, move a piece of towel away so he is one layer closer to the onion.” What do you think? Neat, eh? My pediatrician recommended a few drops of olive oil in the ear to ease pain. I’ve tried it with Ben, and it seemed to give him some relief. I’m going to try the onion. Why not? It’s an alternative that just might work. And I think that Ben would find it kind of fun to put...

Here we go….

I’ve been wanting to start a blog for a while now. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about starting it, talking about starting it, tinkering with the layout (and that was hard because I am basically a computer-dummy), and now, writing it. Is anyone actually going to read what I write on here? Maybe. Well….my mom will read it (Hi Mom!). Regardless, I do have a purpose to starting this, and here it is: Deciding to be a mom was one the very best decision that I have ever made (second only to marrying Pierre), and I want to share that. The time spent being home with my boys goes by so fast. Ok….let’s rephrase that….actual days can seem endless (and there are definitely times when I call Pierre at work, and tell him not to dare come home without wine. Or chocolate. Or both!!), but still each day, each week, seems to be going by faster and faster. I blinked and my youngest went from being a baby to turning three years old this coming Tuesday. And the next time I blink he’ll be thirty-three!...

A Brother’s Love

The boys had ice-cream for dessert tonight. In fact, not only did they have ice-cream, they had an ice-cream sundae with whipped cream and strawberries, a special treat as only Grandma can make. Spoiled little bugs. Just as my two sweet-toothed monkeys were about to dig-in, Grandpa, being “the silliest” as Nicholas calls him, pulled a fast one. Taking Nicholas’ bowl of ice-creamy-yumminess, Grandpa said: “Mmmm-mmmm. That’s my ice cream, Nicholas. Thank you!” And he pretended to gobble up the bowl. Nicholas was not impressed. He stuck-out his bottom lip, and gave a somewhat convincing fake cry while burying his little head in his chair. I wouldn’t have awarded him an Oscar for this particular performance, but his point was clear enough: Grandpa had his ice cream, and he wasn’t going to let it be eaten without protest. Now Benjamin, watching all this unfold, had a very different reaction. His big, blue eyes welled up with tears, not of the crocodile variety, his face cru...
