The Latest…

Hi y’all.

I know. I haven’t blogged in about 500 years. That might be an exaggeration, but you get what I’m talking about. It’s been a while, a long while. So long, in fact, that each time I’ve sat down to actually write, I couldn’t. After almost five months of silence, how do I get started again? And why has it taken so long to get something down?

As Ben just said, “You haven’t done blogs in a long, long time Mommy because you’ve been writing papers.”

You all know that I’ve been plowing away at my School Psychology degree for about six years now (since pregnancy with Nicholas!). The end is near…I’ve been on practicum, which is 75 hours in a school over the course of a semester, but roughly 56 gazillion hours work at home. Or at least that’s what it feels like. Listen, go hug your the school psychologist in your school (and for that matter, your child’s teacher, specialist, principal, administrative assistant, TSS, OT, PT, SLP….).  Go hug them right now!! They work hard. Really, really hard. And they don’t get hugged enough.

To say that this practicum has taken over my life would not really be an exaggeration. There’s a life/work balance that I have yet to achieve. And, having been at home with my boys for the past seven years (the best thing I could have ever done!), the return to working outside the home, paid or not, has been tough. In my evaluation, my supervisor (who is a rock star!) wrote that I needed to learn to set boundaries to avoid burnout. She wasn’t kidding. My semester is done, but I’m staying on the job until the end of the school year. There’s more to learn before I hit internship next fall. But, good Lord, it is a lot of work.

And there’s a lot to learn on the home-front too. Like dealing with guilt. And time-management. And prioritizing too.  Oh, and learning to say no, and being okay with that. Yeah. That might be the toughest lesson of all. I’m not there yet. I’m learning to deal with the things that are going to slip (like a clean house)…but, frankly, there are days when I feel like I am drowning. Mommies who work full-time, part-time, sometimes, from home, volunteer…throw me the life-preserver! What’s your best advice?

What else has slipped? Blogging. I

But, I’m trying to get back to it. Because, I already feel like time is flying by, and well, I need to remember where we’ve been and what we’ve done.

In that spirit, here’s a little of what’s been going on the last few months, courtesy of my Facebook status posts. Honest to goodness, how would I ever know the news without Facebook? For my friends on FB, skip to the end. Otherwise, here’s a little of the last four months in my world.

January 15 - First day of practicum done and Nicholas says, "Mommy, are you a psychologist yet?" No buddy...not yet!

January 25 - Fun on the slopes this morning with my biggest ski-monkey!

January 31 - Pierre showed the boys a documentary on the Titanic today. Tonight, they were chatting with each other, from their bedrooms across the hall, in Morse Code.

February 6 - My sons are so complimentary today...
Ben: Mommy, you should buy that Meaningful Beauty stuff from the T.V. commercial so you can be as beautiful as Cindy Crawford.
And later...
Nicholas: Mommy, you smell like hair.

February 16 - Dressed like he is 100 to celebrate the 100th day of school.

February 27 - My little scientists!!

March 2 - Ready for Hat Day tomorrow!

March 16 - They didn't catch the Leprechaun, but he left them a few surprises!

March 22 - Space Shuttle Discovery at the Air & Space Museum!

March 24 - Ben's an orange belt!

March 28 - Just told Ben that he sounded like a broken record, and he had no idea what I was talking about. He also didn't know what a record is. I feel old.

March 29 - We bought Ben new shoes this weekend...they're a little snug, but I can wear them (I’ll add in…that is really scary. He’s seven!)!!

April 1 (My PSA) - Going to share a pet peeve for a minute...
If you see a school bus, lights flashing, stop-sign out, waiting for children at an intersection then please, please STOP!
In fact, stop behind the row of cars letting kids out to run for the bus. You don't need to roll, however slowly, to the corner. Don't worry. You'll get to the intersection. What's the hurry?
About a month ago, Ben was almost hit by a car that just couldn't wait and wasn't looking as Ben flew out of the van to catch the bus. Now, I get out of the van first.
Please, help out your neighborhood parents by waiting behind the row of cars as our children get to their school bus. It'll take you an extra minute, but it might just save a life.

April 8 - So, the boys and I missed the bus this morning....while parked at the bus stop. Hmmm...

April 9 - I'm Batman.

April 12 - Listening to a bedtime troll story from Grandpa.

April 15 - Ben's been writing messages on bananas. At least he's practicing his writing.

April 21 - Just found my first tick of the season (on Nicholas!). As much as I love Spring, I'm not so fond of ticks.

April 23 - Nicholas: "Mommy, do you know how to tell if someone is Canadian or not? It's all in their voice."

April 25 - I just had to kiss the Millennium Falcon goodnight. Yes, I have boys.

Even these statuses are a little sparse. I’d like to say that I’ll write more often, but I can’t make promises that I don’t know if I can keep. In the meantime,  it feels good to be getting ‘out there’ again. I hate the silence of the last four or five months. How much did I miss?

Seriously, advice!! Share it, write it, I need it! Mommies of the world, I have so much to learn from you!

Be back soon.

xo Naomi

Funny Medicine

So, after blogging about Ben’s ear infection, a good friend messaged me on Facebook with a unique remedy for ear pain. She’s had a ruptured eardrum, so if she says that this works, I’m inclined to believe her. Here’s the message: “If Ben complains about pain, take an onion and mash it as you would a potato. Then, wrap it in something and heat it in the microwave till it’s hot (not hot like I'll burn you if I touch it, but hot). Take it out of the microwave and wrap it in a towel (don't worry you can wash it out after), put it on a pillow and then have Ben put his sore ear on it. When he no longer feels the heat, move a piece of towel away so he is one layer closer to the onion.” What do you think? Neat, eh? My pediatrician recommended a few drops of olive oil in the ear to ease pain. I’ve tried it with Ben, and it seemed to give him some relief. I’m going to try the onion. Why not? It’s an alternative that just might work. And I think that Ben would find it kind of fun to put...

Here we go….

I’ve been wanting to start a blog for a while now. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about starting it, talking about starting it, tinkering with the layout (and that was hard because I am basically a computer-dummy), and now, writing it. Is anyone actually going to read what I write on here? Maybe. Well….my mom will read it (Hi Mom!). Regardless, I do have a purpose to starting this, and here it is: Deciding to be a mom was one the very best decision that I have ever made (second only to marrying Pierre), and I want to share that. The time spent being home with my boys goes by so fast. Ok….let’s rephrase that….actual days can seem endless (and there are definitely times when I call Pierre at work, and tell him not to dare come home without wine. Or chocolate. Or both!!), but still each day, each week, seems to be going by faster and faster. I blinked and my youngest went from being a baby to turning three years old this coming Tuesday. And the next time I blink he’ll be thirty-three!...

A Brother’s Love

The boys had ice-cream for dessert tonight. In fact, not only did they have ice-cream, they had an ice-cream sundae with whipped cream and strawberries, a special treat as only Grandma can make. Spoiled little bugs. Just as my two sweet-toothed monkeys were about to dig-in, Grandpa, being “the silliest” as Nicholas calls him, pulled a fast one. Taking Nicholas’ bowl of ice-creamy-yumminess, Grandpa said: “Mmmm-mmmm. That’s my ice cream, Nicholas. Thank you!” And he pretended to gobble up the bowl. Nicholas was not impressed. He stuck-out his bottom lip, and gave a somewhat convincing fake cry while burying his little head in his chair. I wouldn’t have awarded him an Oscar for this particular performance, but his point was clear enough: Grandpa had his ice cream, and he wasn’t going to let it be eaten without protest. Now Benjamin, watching all this unfold, had a very different reaction. His big, blue eyes welled up with tears, not of the crocodile variety, his face cru...
